Local business leaders learned a lot about what's happening in area schools during the recent Chamber of Commerce Logan County Leadership Education Day hosted at Indian Lake High School.
Several local superintendents served on a panel that answered questions ranging from communication with parents, to conferences, curriculum, career opportunities and safety concerns. With a new emphasis on social-emotional learning in Ohio, the superintendents also discussed what they do to support the mental health of students, staff members and even themselves.
After the panel, Indian Lake Schools Superintendent Dr. Rob Underwood highlighted some of the unique programs offered at Indian Lake Schools that have bolstered test scores and overall student achievements in recent years.
He explained "The Lake Effect" culture, which is based on the R-Factor process of understanding that you control your reaction to events and can affect the ultimate outcome of a situation. Dr. Underwood also showcased the district's 21st Century Grant known as Careers@ILS, an after school program that offers a variety of clubs for homework help, career exploration and more.
"I feel like if we can keep kids at school as long as we can during the day, something positive will come out of it. And it give them the opportunity to make further connections with our staff to have more adult support in their lives."
He explained that the district is in the process of applying for another five-year 21st Century Grant in hopes of continuing all the programs.
