Members of the Laker Leadership Council are collaborating with ILMS students who are involved in their LLC-Laker Leadership Corps. Laker Leadership Council representatives came to the middle school recently for a productive meeting discussing their similar missions.
The ILMS LLC was created earlier this school year as part of the intensive Behavioral Leadership training program that students and staff are mastering. ILMS LLC students assist in releasing students and leading cafeteria clean up at lunchtime daily, along with other special tasks to help teachers and in the office. As these students are trained to be responsible in classroom and more public settings, they are likely to slide right into the ILHS Laker Leadership Council when they hit freshman year.
High schoolers talked about their role in advising Superintendent Dr. Underwood on matters and explained some outreach activities.
Now that both groups have a good understanding of their shared responsibilities, it is the hope that they can find ways to continue to have a positive influence on the district.
The Laker Leadership Council is taking note of new behavioral leadership strategies at work throughout Indian Lake Schools.
The council met recently for the first time in 2026. Superintendent Dr. Rob Underwood and Curriculum Director Mrs. Kelli-Tebbe Miller discussed with the group some of the new behavioral leadership methods that are happening. Students recognized that many teachers are using the "noticing" strategy with their classmates. "Noticing" is pointing out that a person made an improvement by validating a good choice, but not necessarily complimenting the action. For example, "I notice you got all your homework turned in today." In addition, they discussed the importance of leading by example and being a positive role model to younger students.
The Laker Leadership Council also talked with Mr. Underwood about how he and his team determine delays and cancellations.
The group will continue reading with the second graders at ILES later this month and several more times this spring.

The LLC met this week for the first time with new freshman members who were invited to join the group. After introductions, Superintendent Dr. Rob Underwood and District Curriculum Director Kelli Tebbe explained the purpose of the Council and talked about upcoming projects. All members of the Laker Leadership Council will participate in the 2nd and 7 Reading program at Indian Lake Elementary School later this week.
Members of the Laker Leadership Council met with ILES second graders recently to read a story and share their love of reading, sports, music, art and other extracurriculars.
They presented the first book in their "Second and 7 Hog Mollies" series that focuses on overarching ideas like being kind, including everyone, hygiene and more.
This is the second year that Laker Leadership Council members are participating in this outreach with our younger students to give them positive role models in the upper grade levels.
The Laker Leadership Council is ready to get to work this school year. They met recently for the first time this fall.
The first order of business was to sign up for 2nd and 7 reading outreach with the second graders at ILES. They will continue sharing their "Hog Mollies" stories that focus character building. LLC members will visit the elementary monthly to continue the program that began last school year.
Finally, they also talked about the new statewide no cell phone policy and how that affects communication with parents and other students through out the day. Most students said they are able to better concentrate without their phones as a distraction.
They also discussed potential freshmen who may be chosen for the council. Several 9th graders will be invited to join for their input.
The Laker Leadership Council is group of high school students from every grade level who meet with and advise Superintendent Rob Underwood throughout the school year.
