Indian Lake Local School leaders are proud to announce that the district has once again received a competitive 21st Century Community Learning Center Grant that will enhance education for students at all levels of learning.

The grant is called Careers@ILS and is worth a total of $850,000 over the next five years.

Indian Lake Superintendent Rob Underwood said recently, “Only a handful of schools received funding in this grant cycle and I am so proud of everyone’s hard work on this initiative. Our staff is now finalizing the details on how this grant will most effectively serve our students.”

Careers@ILS will extend the learning opportunities offered a few years ago when Indian Lake High School received a similar, three-year 21st Century Grant. Underwood explains that the plan is to reinstate after-school tutoring for reading and math at ILHS, continue to support extension education in those subjects through the ILHS Science Club, ILHS Robotics Club, ILHS Art Club, ILHS Welding and Carpentry Club and offer a new ILHS E-Sports Club alongside other wellness activities. Furthermore, the grant will allow programming at Indian Lake Middle School for grades five through eight. After school snacks and transportation home for participants will also be covered.

Finally, the grant will help fund the construction of a boardwalk to easily access the wetland area behind Indian Lake Elementary School for study by students in all grade levels.

Jo DeMotte will serve as the grant coordinator and site directors will be hired to administer the programs at both ILHS and ILMS.

Extensive planning is underway at this time. Information will be available for parents and students at a booth during the Osgood State Bank Spirit Night event on Friday, September 13th from 5 to 7 p.m. Programming will begin October 14th.

Superintendent Underwood extended a special thanks to Sybil Truster, from the Midwest Regional Educational Service Center, for her assistance in writing the grant.

The Ohio Department of Education's Office of Improvement and Innovation administers the 21st Century Community Learning Center (CCLC) grant. This federally funded grant program supports high-quality, out-of-school time learning opportunities and related activities for students who attend eligible schools. Recent flexibility from the U.S. Department of Education allows 21st Century funds to be used for expanded learning time programming during the school day, week or year in addition to out-of-school time.
