Select students at Indian Lake Schools are getting their eyes and ears checked this week.
District Nurse Kourtney Thompson says the exams are part of state required health screenings. Fifth and seventh graders were tested at the Middle School today. Freshman and juniors at the High School will undergo tests to detect problems with vision and hearing later this week. All Indian Lake preschoolers, kindergarten, first and third graders at the elementary will be tested as well. On Friday, the remainder of elementary students will be tested along, with anyone who was absent. Finally, all students who are new to the district will also be examined.
The tests can help determine if students suffer from deficient hearing, color blindness, stereopsis causing the eyes to work separately and other issues that could affect learning. Parents will be notified if their student needs follow-up care. Thanks to the volunteers and students from the Ohio Hi-Point Health Careers Academy who are helping conduct the tests over several days.
