The staff and students of Indian Lake Schools lovingly remember long-time teacher Jean Newmeyer. Many are wearing their yellow and black shirts in honor of her passing. Yellow is the signature color of sarcoma cancer.

Miss Newmeyer was a special education teacher/special education intervention specialist at Indian Lake Middle School for more than 34 years. She was also a dedicated middle school cross country and track and field coach. She retired at the end of the 2018 school year because of complications with sarcoma. Miss Newmeyer had fought the rare disease over the past two years. Despite her many required treatments at the Cleveland Clinic, she was determined to teach and continue to impact students at ILMS.
Over her decades of service to Indian Lake Schools, she touched the lives of thousands of students. Her sense of humor and tender teaching style gave her the uncommon ability to motivate and inspire students to give learning their all, even when it was really hard. One of her favorite memories of her time at ILMS was moving into the new building in 1998.
Last May, Miss Newmeyer led the ILMS Relay for Life, slapping hands with students as she rounded the track with her family. Newmeyer also led the Inaugural Race for the Cure Sarcoma in Cleveland, with her Cleveland Clinic family, in June to raise money for further research.
