The Indian Lake Board of Education met in regular session on Monday, October 21st.
Superintendent Rob Underwood announced to board members that our district will be one of only two pilot schools in Ohio for Mental Health First Aid instruction for students under the age of 18. This will be similar to the training the entire staff participated in during 2018. College and Career Readiness teacher Doug Reprogle will train in the program, alongside local mental health advocate Steve Terrill in Indianapolis lat this year. The two will begin teaching Mental Health First Aid to juniors in early 2020. The district will also be part of a control study by Johns Hopkins University to determine whether the mental health training is successful in young people.
In addition, District Special Education Director Meaghen Tidwell gave board members an update on Indian Lake's special ed programs. She says no other nearby district offers the diversity of programs for these students, including self-contained units, resource rooms, classroom inclusion, VLA, general classroom instruction and vocational opportunities. Tidwell also reported that the district's special education students performed better than expected on this year's state tests.
The board will meet again November 18th.
