Chick-inn Hutch Indian Lake High School agriculture students will have a new facility for raising small animals soon.
The Indian Lake/Ohio Hi Point FFA program accepted a $7,350 Ag Impact Grant from the Logan County Farm Bureau at the December Indian Lake Board of Education meeting.
FFA advisor and ILHS Ag Educator Tanner Schoen says the money will be used to construct a 24-by-26-foot chicken coop hoop building, called a chick-inn hutch on campus and equipment for feeding and maintaining foul.
Schoen explains that a few students raised chickens in the ILHS Ag Shop last summer with much success. With the addition of this building, he hopes the program will grow and allow students who do not live on a farm to participate in raising animals.
“Having this building will let us expand and have animals year round here at Indian Lake’s campus. So the kids that are in ag classes or animal science classes will get that true, hands on learning opportunity that they could not get in any other classroom setting.”
ILHS students Nikita Scheifele and Jarrett Monroe won Grand and Reserve Grand Champion at the Logan County Fair this summer with birds that they raised at ILHS for their FFA Supervised Agriculture Experience Projects.
Schoen hopes the hutch will be complete and operational this spring.
