A crowd of Indian Lake area leaders and local senior citizens were among the first to get a sneak peek of the Indian Lake Elementary School Wetland Art Project.
Students paraded the letter panels they helped create, which depict the vast flora and fauna of the ILES wetland during the recent Indian Lake Local Schools Community Leader/Senior Appreciation Breakfast.
Diners included local law enforcement officials and first responders, area legislators and many involved members of the community.
ILES Art Teacher Terry Nelson explained that the Wetlands Art Project stemmed from a grant she received from the Ohio Arts Council. Visiting polymer clay artist Melissa Terlizzi worked with the students over the past two school years to make the panels and other clay creations. Students throughout the school studied the plants and animals in the wetland while working on their art. Finally, advanced language art students in Cammie Honaker's class created alliterative text for each letter involving creatures from the wetlands. During the breakfast, they shared some of that text, which will be used in a children's alphabet book now being designed and published by ILHS graphic design students. Finally, there will be a reception at ILES once the Wetlands Art Project Alphabet Wall is complete near the art room.
Indian Lake Superintendent Rob Underwood also gave the diners an update on all the activities happening on campus now and in the near future including our 21st Century grant restarting this month, a major roof and EFIS repair project at the high school and more.
The breakfast wrapped up with optional tours of the building and Chromebook demonstrations.
Thanks to everyone who came to ILES for the event, to ILES Student Council members who assisted, and the ILES Food Service Staff.
